But I keep them somewhat at bay or namecheck them with a wink, because I think metal tends to be gender fascist. You might think it's metal's strength to reject irony and camp as a survival method in a hostile world, but I only see that as faking lack of ambition. Cuz let's face it, metal bands can be as greedy as they come - Metallica going after their fans for illegal downloading pretty much says everything you need to know about how metal bands cherish the working class they exploit.
I don't have much patience for this sort of self-righteousness. Pop wins hands down in that department because it acknowledges its own corruption. Metal fans sometimes remind me of those people who refuse to see how Wagner can be equally preposterous and sublime. Metal refuses kitsch. What makes it semiotically and politically ineffective is not, however, its isolationist and protective notion of community, which ends up being a mutated form of racial purity (a sort of WASPy "don't pollute our moral pool" thing). It's the inability to thrive on the oxymorons. It might serve as a solace and even have greater spiritual value than other music genres, but politically it is even less effective than pop music. Pop still has more political impact than metal - just ask anyone who grew up listening to Bowie. Was any metal band as revolutionary as that?
Then again, it probably comes down to me being queer. We don't really expect anything from music other than the reiteration of our sensibilty and the legitimisation of our preferences. Maybe if I were white and straight and working at Lidl I would think about joining the ranks.
(Oh, you also forgot to mention the sex appeal factor some non-party metal bands seem to have over a segment of the population - mostly girls and queers like me. I personally find Mastodon to have some of the most gorgeous specimens of manhood alive today in the music scene. Let's be honest here, folks, just because metal fans have to pretend to be blind and ascetic doesn't mean the rest of the world must be...)
So I will probably side with the pop queens at the end of the day: not because I listen to them, actually, but because I love the implied cheeky nihilism of it. (I'm scum, I know it; if you're Mastodon's drummer I'll let you punish me.) That said, I will always go home with the hunky metal guy at the end of the night...Nuno Marqueshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15931564821402108396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935370.post-1126438540241657782005-09-11T04:35:00.000-07:002005-09-11T04:35:00.000-07:00Great paper - it raises some interesting points. With T shirts, it seems that in certain quarters, the connotations of the image/text on the shirt are more important that what it actually denotes.

Case in point:
1) Motorhead shirts on sale at Top Shop
2) David Beckham wearing a Cult Electric shirt
3) Americana, i.e. people wearing the shirt of a high school they never attended
3) Don't even get me started with Che Guevara shirts...

The wearers of said shirts would be hard pressed to name songs of the bands or explain who Che was.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935370.post-1125871384612402372005-09-04T15:03:00.000-07:002005-09-04T15:03:00.000-07:00I've read your article and found it most interesti...I've read your article and found it most interesting, not only because I study sociology and the theme of human groups and symbolisms and such is fascinating, but also, and maybe most importantly, because I'm a metalhead myself. And actually happen to share the same shirt philosophy.

I just wouldn't say metal is un-ironical, as I woulnd't say Hillary Duff's shirt has any irony in it. I'd see it as a rather empty statement of «rebelion» or whatever... not irony, as it implies another level of self-reflectiveness I'm sure she or whoever chose her outfit doesn't have.

However, it does annoy me or any metal fan seeing those attempts to empty metal shirts of whatever they might mean to us - metal-fans.

And just a small thing. I'm a woman. I don't see my musical choices or personal wardrobe as some sort of provocative «wearing the boy's uniform» type of thing. Precisely because I don't need to, as I'm as much of a metal fan as the next guy. I mean, it's not a gender thing. My metal shirts have deep meaning to me, they too remind me of concerts I've been.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935370.post-1124379716391992162005-08-18T08:41:00.000-07:002005-08-18T08:41:00.000-07:00Cool stuff man...Be sure to check us out and let u...Cool stuff man...
Be sure to check us out and let us know what you think...

http://www.myspace.com/beyondshadows

Cheers!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6935370.post-1115985798598553072005-05-13T05:03:00.000-07:002005-05-13T05:03:00.000-07:00Worse than Hilary Duff though, I saw a man in a PI...Worse than Hilary Duff though, I saw a man in a PINK long sleeved fake Slayer top. Oddly enough, it is the metalheads who cross the street to compliment me on the shirt as much as the young punkers.
Also, I seem to remember seeing a member of the New Kids On The Block discreetly wearing a Bauhaus The Sky's Gone Out t-shirt in one of their videos. I have been a metal critic/dj for almost 20 years and have written a piece for the Libertarian Alliance on libertarianism & metal. Another interesting thing about metal is the people you meet tend to be either thick as pig-dung or very bright indeed. I know of scientists who gene-splice to AC/DC and Iron Maiden, and plenty of IT types who are heavily into metal, including ones running for Parliament as Conservatives. I think the perception that its only a working class and male genre is a bit inaccurate. One thing I know for sure is that admitting you like metal can get the same reaction as admitting you like sex with sheep. I have had people come up to me and whisper to me they like my radio or my reviews. I have seen people "outed" as metalheads and mercifully mocked.

Course now I have gone from gamekeeper to poacher and started my own band Growing Old Disgracefully; who have just completed their debut album.
